A FAMILY OF INDIANS troops through the snow from the Watson Lake Inn and gets on the bus. The mother and father are bent and stooped, wrinkled and slow; the four kids, all in their twenties, wear broad-brimmed hats and leather coats with long fringe. The bus pulls out and the mother opens a basket and passes around sandwiches and pours from a large steaming thermos of coffee.

On past the Upper Liard River, where there is probably the best example of western white spruce in the North; beautiful trees, some of them two hundred feet tall.

We stop for a break at Rancheria where I had gotten off the bus years ago and congratulated myself on finally reaching the Yukon. As if on cue, a Lyndon Transport truck pulls onto the lot just as it had back then. The driver gets down, a long lanky cowboy, and from the other side comes a woman. They walk hand in hand into the lodge, which has sadly been remodeled into inevitable modernity, which means wallboard over old pine planks, a linoleum tile floor like in a trailer, and a plastic counter top, even a Mr. Coffee. The other truckers sit at their special place at the oilcloth-covered table near the warm stove in the kitchen. This trucker and his girl want to be alone. They sit on the chintzy side with me and an Indian man who is going to Whitehorse. We all drink coffee and shiver, keeping both hands around the cup.
